M.E.Ch.A de UC Irvine
Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A) de UC Irvine is a multifaceted ChicanX/LatinX organization that concentrates on political, educational, cultural, and social issues that impact several identities. M.E.Ch.A. pledges to build community while bringing awareness to our campus about issues affecting the greater ChicanX/LatinX community.
At UCI, M.E.Ch.A became one of the founders of the Cross-Cultural Center along with the Black Student Union (B.S.U.), Asian Pacific Student Association (A.P.S.A.), American Indian Student Association (A.I.S.A), and Alyansa ng mag Kababayan. UC Irvine was the first UC campus to have a Cross-Cultural Center to address the inequality students of color were facing on campus. Institution of higher education were first created for White cisgender men; therefore, people of color were denied access to all sorts of education. However, the struggle continues till this day. Students of color are underrepresented in higher education because they are being funneled into the prison system. Institutions like to pledge that “DIVERSITY” is a priority of theirs; however, historically students of color have and still are denied access to a fair and accessible education. Hence, students of color who make it into the institution tend to struggle academically because the institution was not created with students of color in mind. As a result, the institution pushes students of color out of the system because they are not “competent” enough.
Therefore, M.E.Ch.A de UCI is committed to fight the diverse struggle people of color experience. M.E.Ch.A de UCI is here to build a community for all identities. We hosts weekly meeting to engage in critical dialogue on various topics (e.g School to prison pipeline and Undocumented Folks). Furthermore, M.E.Ch.A de UCI will not tolerate any form of racist, homophobic, ableist, transphobic or any other ism. As a student organization we will make sure that our voices are heard and let the community and institution know that we are here and ready to fight back. Lastly, M.E.Ch.A de UCI is an organization for all students of color and identities; therefore, you do not have to be LatinX or of Mexican descent to join. We are an organization comprised of different identities; therefore, we welcome all identities.
